CONGREGATION

OF THE MERCIFUL NUNS OF THE HOLY KARL BORROMÄUS

The Congregation of the "merciful nuns of the holy Karl Borromäus" has existed since 1652. During the time of need after the 30-year war, it developed from a small charitable house. In Nancy/Lorraine, the lawyer Josef Chauvenel dedicated his whole life to the poor, the sick and deserted, and set up a pharmacy for the poor and needy. When the plague broke out in Toul in 1641, he hurried there in order to nurse those affected by the epidemic. He infected himself and died at the age of 31. In line with the wish of the deceased, the father continued his life's work and founded the house of mercy in Nancy.

The young congregation, confirme by the church, quickly spread beyond the national borders. Over the course of time, seven independent sections of the "Borromäus nuns" were founded in various countries. The congregation performs tasks in old people's and nursin homes, hospitals, outpatient nursing, youth education in Kindergartens and schools, in training centre for social professions, the catechesis, and spiritual counselling and in recuperation centres for those of poor means.Operation territories are:

  • Germany,
